BATs GOTV 2019

BAT leaders, state admins and members have been very busy on the streets, either working for campaigns or running for elections! We did a quick check this morning to get an idea of what everyone is going to be watching at the polls tomorrow. Here’s the rundown.

New Jersey

All eyes seem to be on school board races!

Pleasantville - a contentious race for control of a school board in a district that has been plagued with problems and may be facing a state take-over

Camden - the city that has finally regained the right to an elected school board is fighting hard against corporate and hedge fund money, including Netflix CEO Reed Hastings

Jersey City - a city that is no stranger to fighting against corporate reform money

Elizabeth - Kason Little, a NJ BAT and a recent high school graduate continues to push for student voice in the school district.

Toms River - @kathyeagan4BOE Toms River. Board of Ed Kathy is a retired teacher @dellavolleandwheelerforNJAssembly District 10 Erin is a teacher in the Brick Township Schools

Virginia

Virginia is a juggernaut of elections tomorrow. Every position in the state legislature is in play. In Fairfax Virginia we have 12 school board members and 10 Board of supervisors. 8 state Senators and 18 state delegates. Our VA BAT admins are exhausted!

To get Ricardy Anderson this far we had to defeat a TFA candidate in the primary.

Pennsylvania

Education activist and long time BAT member Kendra Brooks is running for Philadelphia City Council. She has been rising above the other candidates and we will be holding our breath to see the poll results!

Oregon

OEA Government Relations Consultant Laurie Wimmer is running for Oregon House of Representatives. Laurie was instrumental in helping to pass the Student Success Act which will mean a huge school funding increase in our state.

Michigan

Our MemeTeam Co-Director, Nancy Osborne has been working hard on the campaigns of Maureen Brosnan for Mayor, and Brandon McCullough & Eileen McDonnell for City Council. She lives in the 9th largest city in Michigan, an older suburb of Detroit.

New Mexico

Albuquerque Public Schools Board is Education. NM BATs running are: Laurie Harris District 2 and Barbara Petersen District 4. Both are retired teachers and AFT NM activists. Yolanda Montoya Cordova District 1 has NM BATs out working hard to get her elected. NM BATs have been working tirelessly to see that these education rock stars are elected to the Board. Laurie Harris is running against an anti-public education and anti-labor candidate.

Utah

Salt Lake City local is fiercely backing Luz Escamilla for Salt Lake City Mayor! First Latina Mayor!

Florida

Florida already has their eye on 2020 candidates!

Ohio

Fighting back against a TFA director in Cincinnati.

Massachusetts

For the first time ever, the Northampton (MA) Association of School Educators - NASE, an MTA/NEA Affiliate, endorsed candidates for local school committee elections.

New York

Jamaal Bowman, another long time public education advocate and BAT member has been working hard for his campaign in NY-16.

California

Our Santa Ana BATs have been working tirelessly to get Carolyn Torres elected for SAUSD school board.

We quickly captured as many as we could - but we know that there are more out there! Good Luck tomorrow and thank you for all that you do!!!
