The fact is children who don’t live in safe, loving homes have much greater difficulty concentrating and caring about academics. Kids with impoverished parents are much more likely to go to underfunded schools and sit in classrooms that are racially segregated.

Why? The conclusion is a simple one. It is because we live in a constant state of fear.
So many of us are scared to teach how we truly want, scared to advocate for what our students (and ourselves) truly need.

When students read fiction and nonfiction, they acquire empathy for the characters and situations depicted in the story. More importantly, they find themselves portrayed by authors they never met but with whom they have some things in common. That empowers students.
